In the suburb of Badlapur, about 2 hours from Mumbai, for a cluster of close to 10 villages and Adivasi Padas, there is not a single public library

For girls and boys living here, this means no access to books, newspapers, computers or the internet outside of school or college. Anyway, the schools and (only 1) college situated here have very basic infrastructure. In this situation, this is the first generation who are trying to continue education beyond class 8 or 10. They have aspirations, but cannot be expected to compete in the job or education market without access to even basic resources. Buying and keeping books in the mud houses they live in, is a faraway reality; having laptops or internet connections is even further removed.

Ensuring their Right to Education, goes beyond only admission in school/college. Access to educational resources and a quiet and comfortable space to study, which can be reached easily and is safe, clean and equipped with basic facilities, is imperative.

Keeping this in mind, Anubhuti has taken the initiative to start a free library, located centrally in a village in Badlapur, that can be accessed by students living in nearby padas and villages. The library is being set up in collaboration with the Gram Panchayat, who have given the space.

However, we need to raise funds for furniture, books, painting the walls, securing the library against rains, as well as internet, drinking water, nutritious food and to build a simple toilet so that students can sit and study without discomfort. The library aims to monthly reach 300 students who belong to rural, Nomadic, Adivasi, indigenous, migrant, informal worker communities. It is envisioned to be a dynamic space with books for school/college studies and competitive exams, as well as regular talks, seminars, career counseling, remedial teaching, and guidance for appearing in different government entrance/competitive exams.

  1. Salutations, esteemed Deepa Mam. I’m your admirer, Shiven. Seeing your NGO makes me very happy because you assist everyone. And may God bless you, your NGO, and all those who assist you on your journey. Since I enjoy helping others, I would be very interested in working with your non-profit organization, helping a lot of underprivileged kids, and spreading the narrative on social media by creating and editing lengthy vlogs. Additionally, I’m getting better at editing and cinematography. In order to assist as a volunteer and as a cameraman or video editor for your Instagram clips, I would really want to attend your session. Furthermore, I’m not sure whether you or your NGO ever hear this, but I want to thank you for assisting children and those in need. Continue to develop and to help forever.
